Charity homepage toolkit

Your homepage is the most scrutinised page on your site. Here’s a toolkit to help you design it with confidence.
Content design and creation

Get out of homepage hell

Every charity struggles with the homepage. It’s the page your CEO has opinions about. The one where every team wants their work to feature. The one that tries to speak to five different audiences at once and ends up serving none of them properly.

And when it comes time to redesign it, the process can be just as painful as the result. Too many voices, not enough method. Everyone has an opinion, but nobody has a plan.

This toolkit gives you the plan. It’s a structured method for consciously designing your homepage content — based on research into 30 charity websites and years of helping organisations work through exactly this problem. It won’t write the words or build the wireframes, but it will give you a clear, defensible picture of what your homepage needs and why.

Used by in-house charity content teams, freelance content strategists, and digital and UX professionals working in the nonprofit sector.

Why buy the toolkit

You’ve been handed a homepage redesign with no clear brief. Your stakeholders each want something different and you need a way to facilitate that conversation. You know your homepage isn’t working but you can’t put your finger on exactly what’s wrong. You want to lead with content, not get handed a design and asked to fill in the boxes. This toolkit exists for exactly those situations. Here’s what it helps you do.
  • Don’t start from a blank slate. A library of content elements gives you starter ideas and inspiration to choose from, so you’re not reinventing the wheel.
  • Avoid the most common mistakes. Find out what charity homepages most often get wrong — so you can sidestep the same pitfalls.
  • Lead with content. Start with content so your homepage is designed around the message, not the other way round.
  • Have better stakeholder conversations. The worksheets give you a structured way to work through competing priorities and get people aligned.
  • Create a solid brief. Walk away with a clear brief for whoever’s writing, designing, and building the page.
  • Improve your users’ experience. Design a homepage that genuinely serves the people you’re trying to reach.
‘I found this to be really handy. I’ve worked within not for profits for four years with a focus on websites, design, marketing and there are elements I learnt with your toolkit to improve my practice around user accessibility and experience.’

‘What you put on your homepage is so important, and it’s so hard to get right. This toolkit gives you all of the information that you need to design a homepage that supports your strategic goals and meets user needs.’

Who it’s for

This toolkit is for you if:
  • You work in-house at a charity or nonprofit and you need a structured way to approach a homepage that’s grown unwieldy or is due for a redesign.
  • You’re a freelance content strategist working with charity clients and you want a solid, repeatable method to bring to the process.
  • You work in brand, marketing, UX, or design and you want a content professional’s approach to homepage planning.
It’s been designed with smaller charities in mind — organisations that want the best homepage possible but are working on a tight budget.

Before you buy

This toolkit won’t design a homepage for you. It’s a method and a set of worksheets, not an automation. You’ll need to invest time in working through it to get value from it.

The worksheets have been designed for Google Sheets. You can download a version for Excel or in open document format — these haven’t been optimised, so you may need to make some edits.

The toolkit is risk-free. If you’re not happy with it, email me within seven days for a full refund.

After you pay, you will get an email with a link to the kit.

When you buy the toolkit, you’re buying a licence to use it for your own homepage design process. You cannot sell, sub-licence, distribute, copy, translate, transfer, or otherwise make it available to anyone else. But you can upgrade to team access for an extra £5 per person – email me to get set up.

The toolkit provides general information about homepage content design. It’s not specific advice for your organisation and unique situation. I’m not liable for any loss or damages you incur in connection with it.
